Summer Painting |
Exhibition text
This piece represents the feeling of sleeping with someone by your side, and the warm feeling in your heart when someone else’s arms are around you. There is a certain sense of security and being completely content, that is unexplainable with words.
Planning
I really wanted to elongate the human form, and twist them into an unconventional pose. I started off sketching one person, as I wanted to highlight the vulnerability of sleep. I then progressed to two people sharing the bed together, showing trust, compassion, and love for another human being hard to explain with just words, I wanted to show that warmth without words, the security/ sanctuary sleeping with another person creates.
Process/technique/experimentation
I started with sketching out my favorite planning sketch onto the canvas, and making sure it wasn’t centered, I wanted the pose of the arms to create movement around the painting, and draw the eyes to every detail. I decided to paint with contrasting colors (yellow and purple) to really play with the mood of the viewer, yet still be pleasing to the eye.
I started going in with different hues of yellow and smoothing out the dimensions of the skin. I started in small areas so I could smooth the skin more consistently, I usually start with a base color of the whole figure, then go in with detail later, however I really wanted to experiment with working small, I loved this technique, and I will continue to use this with the rest of my paintings.
I wanted to make the purple background look like fabric, to give off the illusion that the two figures are laying in bed together, and the viewer is looking down on them from a birds eye view. I created harsh lines at first, then softened them to look like light reflecting off of the fabrics with a soft brush moving in a light circular motion.

After I finished shading the bodies, I started going in with the purple, again I found that using contrasting colors was important to the message of the piece, and really helped the figures stand out, instead of disappearing into the background. I didn’t paint the purple background first because the yellow isn't opaque enough to pop above the purple background. I went in with a smaller brush to outline the figures, so I did not mess up the yellow painting. I then used a larger brush to fill in the rest of the purple.

Summer Physical piece
Exhibition text
I wanted to create a piece that could resonate through multiple generations and connect the gap between them. Vinyls are popular in youth culture, yet the older generation grew up with them. I wanted to show the repetition of time, and how even though mankind changes over time and yet still holds on to common interests.
Process/Technique/Experimentation
I had to keep a close eye on them to make sure than they didn’t melt too much. I left them in the oven long enough for them to become glossy, I then took them out of the oven and smoothed the surfaces with a soft rag , to solidify the shape of the mold, I then waited for them to cool, and peeled them off of the mold. And put the next one on, I originally had 3 vinyl stingrays, however It was left in the oven for far too long, and ended up looking like rough pudding.

I decided to create the tail/fins out of a plastic sheet, and cloth to contrast the smoothness of the vinyl and create an aesthetically pleasing piece. I got this Idea when I was at the Shed aquarium in Chicago, and I was petting the stingrays, it made me think about time, and how overtime people still enjoy the same things, like listening to records.

100 Photos
with my photos I wanted to reflect summer and what it means to me, all of the different perspectives that I see in my life, and all of the different perspectives that I encounter every day. I focused on finding an unseen angle, and found beauty in everyday actions or objects.
