Loss of a Friend
Exhibition Text
This piece represents my feelings on the loss of a dear friend to me. I lost my best friend at work Dom Manske, I needed an outlet to accept and express my feelings during his passing. The darkness coming from the eyes represents the pain and darkness leaving my body through tears, as I accept the loss of Dom.
Inspiration
The Crying boy
by Giovanni Bragolin |
The Crying boy, by the Italian painter Giovanni Bragolin inspired this painting, as the emotion of the boy is felt in the soul of the viewer, and It is easy to tell a story, as you look into the boy's eyes and visualize he is crying because he is hungry, as his clothes are tattered and he is all alone. The child looks abandoned, giving the viewer a want to help, and a need to get involved. Bragolin often painted emotional children to show that side of the poor community. As people are often more sympathetic towards children, and might inspire them to take action to help these children off the streets.

Process, Technique, Experimentation
When sketching this piece onto the canvas I was looking into the mirror outlining my features, as the painting was about me and my feelings. I decided to start with the nose, as It is the most difficult feature to master for me. I wanted to spend extra time and attention to it. I then spread out along the eyes with a base skin tone, and shaded it. I found it difficult to lay down the base skin tone, as the canvas was not gessoed as efficiently as it could have been, and I ended up needing a lot more paint than originally intended. After I finished the base skin tone, and shaping, I highlighted the areas of the face that would light up from direct light, as I wanted the face to shine through the darkness. I then created the creases of the lips and the forehead.
I then begun to work on the eyebrows, layering them with lighter shades as the painting progressed. I created the eyes looking up towards the future to let go of the pain of loss. and I highlighted them in the direction of the direct light. I then filled in the lips by starting with the base shade made from an pinker version of the skin tone, and creating a darker hue for the creases of the lips, than highlighting them. I then added eyelashes to create a more realistic rendering of my face. I filled in the brown background, and then I created the expelling feelings from smoke-like blobs secreting from my eyes as if they are tears.
Reflection
I was very proud of this piece, It was my first time working with oil paint, and I was surprised with the outcome. I used my mixed media utrect brushed to complete this piece. I found it difficult to get the paint to spread onto the canvas, as i had not gessoed it as well as I could have. I found myself having to push quite hard into the canvas. I also found it a lot easier to blend and create more vibrant colors with the oil paint. Giovanni Bragolin's crying boy inspired the way in which these feelings of mourning expel from the human body, and how i accepted the loss of Dom through tears. This paining was very comforting to create, and cause a sense of peace and relaxation when dealing with a drastic change.
