Inspiration
Vexillology: the scientific study of the history, symbolism and usage of flags or, by extension, any interest in flags in general.
I used our school's sports logo as inspiration, because it appears to be a stronger husky than Ronald Reagan's usual husky featured on the planners. I wanted to show the strength and perseverance of Ronald Reagan students.
This Husky Dog logo is the official logo of UConn Division I sports teams, and as such is reserved primarily for use on athletic uniforms and retail merchandise. At the beginning of the 2013-2014 season, a completely new UConn logo was introduced. Here, the University’s mascot, the Jonathan Husky, looked more aggressive and determined. The emblem was developed by the Nike design team headed by Clint Shaner, senior graphic designer at Nike. |

Planning
I first started with my mind map of how I could connect the 3 major aspects of this school into one flag. MPS, Ronald Reagan, and IB. I also tried to incorporate our school's core values, such as community/culture, and our code of safe, respectful, and responsible. I came up with the following flag designs featured below.
1. The triangles represent order and control, as being at Reagan requires organization, the blue represents Reagan, the yellow represents MPS, and the white represents IB. The blue stripe at the end of the flag represents the wear and tear endured by Reagan students and a symbol of strength.
2. The triangles again represent order and control, however, the circle represents the light into the real world that MPS, Reagan, and IB prepare us for. yellow= MPS, white= IB, Blue= Reagan.
3. There is a blue house in the middle to show how Reagan is like a home, and how IB and MPS add to the atmosphere of the school.
4. I made the eye of a husky to represent the strength and resilience of Reagan, the eye represents MPS and how it watches over Reagan, and the white coloration represents the accomplishments achieved by embracing IB.
5. The circle is the world of Reagan with IB as the star, because not every school gets the opportunity to be immersed in IB, and the yellow background is MPS which owns Reagan.
6. The pattern represents the struggles and hardships endured by Reagan students in order to graduate with a decent grade, and how hard you have to work to get there. yellow= MPS, white= IB, Blue= Reagan.
7. #4 reversed colors with the same meaning
8. The stripes represent safe, responsible, and respectful. The white represents safe under the IB roof, because it is a great community that stands out as safe, the rest are under MPS, because it had created the traits.
9. The blue represents the world of Reagan, as it is covered by MPS, and also immersed in IB (white).
10. Reagan is a very respectful and nondiscriminatory school, and has a very caring overall friendship. I wanted that to become a main focus with yellow= MPS, white= IB, Blue= Reagan.
11. The blue half circle represents the IB world, held by the organization of MPS(yellow) and IB(white). the smaller triangles represents the order and control, as being at Reagan requires organization.
12. represents the mesh of MPS, IB, and Reagan, and their incorporation into each other, as yellow= MPS, white= IB, Blue= Reagan.
13.The 3 seed shapes represent the students at Reagan nurtured by IB ad MPS, yellow= MPS, white= IB, Blue= Reagan.
14. The main shape is again shaped as a seed to represent growth, and all of the elements that inspire that growth.
15. this represents the mesh of MPS and IB on the world of Reagan.
16. Again playing off of the seed Idea, The blue beans represent students awaiting the gain of knowledge brought on by IB and MPS.
17. The saw represents the sheer damage that takes a toll on students overwhelmed by MPS and IB, but yet we persevere as we are strong and resilient.
18. This flag represents more of IB, and how it incorporated into everyday life At Reagan run by MPS.
19. blue house for Reagan, stars represent safe, responsible, and respectful made up by MPS, yellow= MPS, white= IB, Blue= Reagan.
20. IB opening up to influence MPS, but more specifically Reagan, yellow= MPS, white= IB, Blue= Reagan.
2. The triangles again represent order and control, however, the circle represents the light into the real world that MPS, Reagan, and IB prepare us for. yellow= MPS, white= IB, Blue= Reagan.

1. Is a larger version of #4 in the 20 flag sketches. The blue represents Reagan, and the flag takes the form of the husky(Reagan's Mascot) To represent strength and perseverance demonstrated by the students. The yellow represents MPS, and how its watching over Reagan as its district mediator, the white represents the war paint of IB and the challenges that must be faced to get the IB scholarship, It is unique to our school, and not every school provides students with such an opportunity.
2. Is a larger version of #16 and represents the growth of Reagan students(Blue) as they are cradled by MPS(yellow) as the light of IB(White) shines upon these growing students.

Process, Technique, Experimentation
When I got the critique back from nicole at MIAD, she stated that she liked my husky design, however she thought that it needed to be zoomed out more, in order for people to understand the message. The original concept for the reagan huskies flag is the first flag featured in the flag above.
|
After i finished the final design for my flag, I cut black presentation board 15x12.5 to accomidate the 1.5 spacing on three sides and the 2inch spacing at tye bottom. I started cutting the board by lightly graising a line with the exacto knife, and progressively going deeper until the board was cut all the way through.
|
After the board was cut i drew the dimensions of the flag design, and created an outline where there was 1.5 inch spacing on three sides, and a 2inch space at the bottom.
|
When coloring in my flag design I decided to chose a darker navy blue for the blue to represent ronald reagan HS. And a bright yellow to represent MPS. I found it difficult to get the dark consistency of the colored pencils.
|
When I finished cutting everything out, it was time to mount the flag design onto the presentation board, I sprayed the white paper with mounting glue and carefully placed it onto the presentation board to match up with the outline i drew earlier.

The yellow of the eye represents MPS and how it is always watching over Ronald Reagan high school, as Ronald Reagan is a Milwaukee public school, , the white represents the war paint of IB and the challenges that must be faced to get the IB scholarship, Some challenges that I faced when creating this piece was zooming out from my original idea, as suggested in my first critique. I eventually was successful in creating the strong outline of our sports mascot. I am proud of the look and meaning that I was able to convey, and I believe this flag is fitting for our school.
