Exhibition Text
This piece represents the progression of pollution, and how if we keep putting pollution behind us and assume that the problem will get dealt with we will just go on watching the world die like nothing is happening. Therefore i presented pollution in a future Polaroid in a future family vacation to the most polluted body of water in the world.
Inspiration
This piece by Salvador Dali inspired the form of my piece in which the pollution formed the face of mother nature, as she is being destroyed. Salvador Dali is a surrealist artist who primarily creates surreal desert scenes, and uses detailed shading, and color to create his sometimes disturbing images. He often uses religion as inspiration, as in this piece a Romanesque figure is being molded in the desert and given the label of Christ's Divinity.
The form inspired me, as the flow of the being, would be beautifully transferred into the water as being the face of polluted human nature, The same way it is being represented as Christ's Divinity in Salvador Dali's piece. |

Process/Technique/Experimentation
I started out with the sketch of the piece, and created a water-like stream going through the entirety of the Ohio river, as it is one of the most polluted places in the world. I made sure to sketch out a face, and pollute only that face, reaching out and killing the wildlife around it, making sure that the theme of my inspiration was seen. I created the water with colored pencil by shading darker and lighter areas to give the effect of distant waves, until the waves grew closer. The closer sea foam waves I created with colored pencil and watercolor, by outlining the breaks in the foam to create the effect of frothy waves.
I then created the sand by coloring it in with colored pencil, and going over it with watercolor, a greenish dark sandy color, to make the earth look sickly to better emphasis the pollution in that area. I created the sun with colored pencils, I wanted to create an "Ugly sunrise". I created the sky with watercolors, and mixed turquoise and gray to get a smoggy hue, that would also give off the impression of a sickly world.
Reflection
This piece is a backlash to pollution and a wake up call to all of the people that throw their trash into the river and onto the streets. Our world is not going to change if we continue to do nothing about it, There will be no more clean sandy beaches, there will be no more cute vacation photos, because this is it, this is the only world we have, and we aren't treating it to last, we are creating a catastrophe for the future. I was Inspired by the form of The Birth of a Divinity by Salvador Dali. The way the piece creates movement is shown in my piece, as I was able to create the movement in my piece within the water, floating directly on top destroying the wildlife that it comes into contact with. I had trouble when transporting the piece from my house to school, as my backpack and piece were both in the backseat, and I made a hard stop.... My backpack fell onto it. Creating the crease in the upper left corner that I am quite distraught about. Other than that I had no trouble in the creation of this piece.
