Exhibition text
These pieces were created to criticize society's perception of love, and the difference between consent and force. I was inspired by Apollo and Daphne by Bernini, and the struggle it expresses as Apollo loves Daphne, but Daphne does not share the same feelings. Consent features the loving embrace between a man and a woman, and how she trusts him enough to turn her back to him and enjoy the moment, because of the love the feel for each other. Where, in Force it expresses the vulnerability a woman is in when she is taken advantage of by a man forcefully. Just because you feel strong feelings for someone, it doesn't mean that they feel the same way. just because a woman wears a certain thing doesn't mean she is asking for it. consent is important, and our society doesn't emphasis its importance as much as they should, there have been many cases where men and women believed they did not cross boundaries, when in fact they had.
Inspiration
Planning
For "love" I practiced drawing different expressions for happiness, and content. the woman in " love" trusts the man featured and is able to turn her back on him, and still feel comfortable.

Process/technique/experimentation
The beginning sketch for "Force" was quite disturbing, and the piece itself was quite disturbing. I decided on the mans hand covering the woman's mouth. The man has a seemingly calm disposition. while the woman is terrified.
She is in a very vulnerable position, while her back is exposed facing the man that is taking advantage of her. her body is bare giving a gloomy and cold chill to the situation.

I colored both pieces with colored pencils, and shaded with multiple different colors, I wanted to create a smooth skin-like texture. I pressed harder than usual with the colored pencils to get the desired look. I found the face to be very difficult, as it was smaller than I was used to drawing pictures. I decided to give the man the average build, as he did in the inspiration piece.
|
I decided to go with a nice cheery blue for the man's shorts, as he is in a good mood, enjoying life with the woman he loves. I used a mixture of three colored pencils to create the shaded look of the man's blue shorts. I used Light blue, dark blue, and white for the highlights.
|
The yellow dress warn by the woman, was to add to the brightness of the blue shorts, as the two happy colors complimented each other. I started off with a solid bright yellow, and I added texture by shading the folds in the fabric with a mixture of brown, orange, and white. I wanted the dress to still show her figure and curves so I had the dress lay tight around her legs, showing the form of her stomach.
I then took watercolor markers and made the cliff. They are standing on a cliff to add to the presentation of their love, and in "force" the presentation of the cruelty of humanity. |
I used water color markers to paint the sky of "love". I really wanted to create the perfect sunset to set the mood of a couple in love, enjoying their time together. I wanted this piece to be colorful, in contrast to "force" because I wanted to emphasize the colors of the world when you are in love.
|
I then blended all of the colors together with water. I then made clouds out of water puddles, and added birds to make it seem as though they were somewhere warm and welcoming.
|
Finished products side by side, the cliff almost seems to connect where they meet

Reflection
This piece depicts the flaws in our society, and how the meaning of consent has lost its power. People are unaware of the pain that they can inflict on others. In "love" it shows a woman and a man sharing trust with each other, as the woman is vulnerable and turns her back to the man, she trusts him enough to assume that he would never do anything to hurt her. "force" features a woman being taken advantage of, after giving her thoughts on having an amorous relationship with the man featured, he did not take no for an answer. Some challenges that I faced when creating this piece was time management. I Underestimated the amount of time that it would take to complete this project, as I usually dislike colored pencils greatly, but for the quality of the piece I wanted to use them as they create the smoothest textures for skin. However, I am very proud of this piece, and I believe that I have accurately depicted the theme of these pieces by using Apollo and Daphne by Bernini, I made sure to exhibit the same movement in both pieces to draw the eye to both expressions upon each figure's face.

I can infer that Bernini wanted to depict this story in the climax of the event, by sculpting Daphne in mid-transformation.
