Dry Point
Artwork: Dry point
Title: Focus through chaos Size: Medium: Intaglio on watercolor paper Completion: 11/21/18 Exhibition textThis piece represents the fight to focus through chaos and the struggle of juggling many tasks at once. I used my dog Remmi who is a vizsla for inspiration because he is the pinnacle of focused, when you are holding a tennis ball in your hand nothing else matters, not even food. My concept came from the overwhelming work that I am expected to complete while also having a job and participating in basketball everyday after school. However I am always able to get focused and find a way to get my work done.

Vizsla Print
By Raymond peace This page comes from an illustrated book on Hunting Dog's published in 1964 the illustration measures approximately 5" x 6" and has been professionally matted in a flat black, acid free mat. The finished size is 8" x 10. |
Musee du Louvre
By I.M Pei, Louis De Vau, Pierre Lescot, Hector Lefuel, Louis Visconti, and Claude Perrault I was more specifically inspired by the steel and glass pyramid designed by the American architect I.M Pei. The Louvre building complex underwent a major remodeling in the 1980s and ’90s in order to make the old museum more accessible and accommodating to its visitors. To this end, a vast underground complex of offices, shops, exhibition spaces, storage areas, and parking areas, as well as an auditorium, a tourist bus depot, and a cafeteria, was constructed underneath the Louvre’s central courtyards of the Cour Napoléon and the Cour du Carrousel. The ground-level entrance was crowned by this steel and glass pyramid. |
I was inspired by both Vizsla print by Raymond peace and the steel glass pyramid featured at Musee du Louvre and I used the vizsla print for the texture of the dog featured in my piece. I then used the Louvre's pyramid for the Triangle chaos the vizlsa is breaking through.
Planning
Process/Techniques/Experimentation
The first part of this process was scratching out the plate, and creating the image to be able to start the inking process with oil based ink.
When the paper was done soaking and the 8 minutes were up, I took the water color paper out of the bin full of water, and placed it on a t-shirt, folded it over, and patted it until the paper was damp.
|
Then I filled a bin full of water to soak the Water color paper for 8 minutes so it would be able to soak into the cracks of plate and absorb the ink.
I then placed newsprint on the roller, and placed the plate scratched side up. I placed the watercolor paper on top of that and put the blankets on top of that, then proceeded to roll the dry point piece.
|
As the paper was soaking I coated the plate with ink and then proceeded to wipe away the excess ink, until the ink was only in the scratched out sections of the plate.
It took multiple trials to get the look that was desired, but eventually I got my final product.

Reflection
My piece resembles that of Raymond Peace's work because both pieces are prints and feature the same breed of dog, a vizsla. It is not similar to Raymond peace's work because Focus through chaos portrays a deeper meaning around the vizsla rather than just the dog itself hunting in the field. Focus through chaos is similar to the steel and glass pyramid featured at The Louvre because of the triangular patterns and intended organization. However Focus through Chaos is a Dry point print where The steel and glass pyramid is part of a building, and a structure. My piece feature my dog Remmi focusing on a tennis ball, and completely disregarding the chaos and disorder around him, The triangles represent chaos and disorder, while Remmi is breaking through that to get to his main goal the tennis ball. Therefore portraying the message of having to focus on your end results and dreams, no matter what obstacles stand in your way. Some things that went well was my final piece print, It came out clear, and I was able to get smudging in areas that I wanted to. It took many trials and redoing the whole process to actually get a clear print, the most difficult and frustrating part of this project is that I would wipe away more ink than necessary and end up with a patchy product.
