Exhibition text
This piece features three hands repetitively reaching out for the cactus, even though it causes pain. This piece is a reflection of society's need for acceptance, and how desperate everyone is to gain it. people need to be told how good their doing in order to do good, but in the end it hurts them as they strive to do great, but fall short.
Inspiration
Planning
I drew sickly hands to show the repetitive unhealthy reach for acceptance, and the damage it causes.
|
I sketched out the type of cactus that I wanted to use, based off of one of my own cactus (Timothy Seymour the 1st)
|
I planned out the layout between the sickly hands, and the cactus, I reallly wanted the hands to embody pain and suffering, I chose to make an odd number of hands as they are more ashetically pleasing. The way the hands reach
toward the cactus, make it seem as though they are in desperate need of something, and in this case it is acceptance. |

Process, Techniques, and Experimentation
I wanted to stay true to my original design of the three hands reaching toward the cactus, even though they were experiencing pain, they kept reaching toward the cactus. I tried several sizes of the linoleum peeling tool, and I found the smallest one had the most desired look. I wanted a realistic cartoon look, I used the hands of the Gorillaz as an example.
|
I used a metal ink plate to roll the in on, a spatula to scoop out the ink onto the plate. I also had a brayer to roll the in across the metal plate to get an even amount onto the linoleum slab. I had a barren to press the ink into the paper to create the image.
|
After the linoleum plate is evenly coated with paint, I pressed the ink into the paper with the baron, and make sure to smooth out all air bubbles. I then peeled the paper off of the linoleum plate and got my finished result. In the end I had made 3 prints, surprisingly my first print turned out to be the best print.

Reflection
This piece features three hands reaching for a cactus, which represents the need for acceptance. Some of the hands have been pierced with cactus needles, yet they continue to hurt themselves to obtain constant acceptance. when carving the linoleum plate I tried to stay close to the original sketch, However I did add a boarder to complete the look. I found it hard finding a theme for this piece, and it took me 3 days to come up with the message that I wanted to convey. I originally was going to carve a woman along with the arms, however I thought if the arms were anonymous it would add to the message. Overall I believe this piece was successful in conveying how dangerous constantly reaching for acceptance is. I think the lines of the piece could have been bolder, and I could have carved deeper into the linoleum plate, but I just wanted a faint outline to emphasis the meaning.
ACT Questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
Paisaje con cactus by Diego rivera, inspired the focal point of the cactus, and Its representation of acceptance, and Selbstbildnis (Self-portrait), 1924 by Käthe Kollwitz inspired the etchy technique that I used to complete this piece.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The author of the article on Selbstbildnis (Self-portrait), 1924 by Käthe Kollwitz approached the piece in an informative manner, as it explains the meaning of the piece, and the artists intentions.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Kathe Kollwitz was around during the depression in Germany, and most of her works convey individuals in distress, and in anguish. The hardships her and her people went through was directly shown in her piece Selbstbildnis (Self-portrait), 1924 by Käthe Kollwitz as she appears to be hopeless.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?.
I was looking for pieces that convey struggle, and mean more than they appear to. In Selbstbildnis (Self-portrait), 1924 by Käthe Kollwitz this piece appears to be herself going through all of the hardships she is faced with, and being overwhelmed.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I can infer that Paisaje con cactus by Diego rivera was meant to criticize a male dominated world, and how women are considered as minorities and looked down upon, because of the one cactus in this painting with womanly features.
