Exhibition Text
This piece explains that abortion is a woman's choice, and that it is hers and hers alone. Men's opinion on the matter is not valid, because they will never have to face this decision, as they are represented as empty sperm within the matter. what happens to a woman's body is her choice and no one else's.
Inspiration
Abortion
By Barbara Tereshchenko |
Abortion is the removal of a fetus from a womb to reverse a pregnancy. This piece by Barbara Tereshchenko inspired the real life realization of abortion and what it means to a woman to come to the decision of removing a fetus from their body. It is a woman's choice whether or not they decide to abort their baby. People are trying to ban this practice because it is "Immoral" or "cruel". There are many different reasons that a woman chooses abortion, but no one should shame her for it, or take away her right to take this action. Esspecially not men, as they will never know what it is like to be pregnant, nor will they ever know. So why do they feel the need to voice their invalid opinion on the matter?

Process/Technique/Experimentation
This piece is done completely freehand, there was no sketch beforehand, therefore there are no pencil lines. all of the initial components are created in watercolor with a flat brush. The weaving within the womb full of vines, create a visual of life growing inside the womb, the fetus within the leaves of the piece showing that they can be removed through abortion, yet they are still attached to the woman, there are part of her and her womanhood. The orange outline of the womb is not detached from the body because i wanted to create a bond between mother and womb. The gray lining I created with the liner pen I wanted a flow with the inside of a woman's womb, and I wanted it to glow yellow to show the creation of life, and bringing of a child into this world.
The sperm featured in this piece were created with black liner sharpie, and I colored it in with grey to show the empty and baron opinion that men have towards this issue. The black surrounding the sperm was created with watercolor to create the illusion of men tainting the opinions on abortion.
Reflection
My piece resembles that of Barbara Tereshchenko's work because both pieces feature the same theme of abortion. Tereshchenko's piece is putting you in the operating room of an abortion clinic. where my piece is a more representational piece on the opinions toward abortion. some trouble that I had with this piece was the yellow watercolor, within the liner pen. It bled through the lines, and i was unable to see the detailing within, so i had to go over the piece. Mother has a very personal connection to me, as my father wanted me aborted when my mom found out she was pregnant with me, yet she kept me because that's what she believed was the best option. I wouldn't hold it against her if she didn't make the same decision the second time around, as my family did not have very much money at the time, and i was forced to grow up at a very young age. I love this piece and I am proud of the less realistic more representational art that shows my stance on abortion.
